Nintendo Switch: The best and worst of gaming

Nintendo Switch: Review

The Switch represents the best and worst of gaming. The biggest advances for Nintendo are coming this next year as they get ready to release their newest gaming console: The Nintendo Switch. The Switch represents the best and the worst of gaming in a single console. Oh sure, Nintendo recently made news by selling nearly 200,000 units of their throwback entertainment system, The NES Classic, in a single month. Nintendo has long made their standard the family-friendly, graphics-light, casual gamer category. But the Switch is hoping to take that to the next level. The Best and the Worse: Watch this first. Pokemon Go: The Good, the Bad and the Gospel

PC: Nick Statt, The Verge, http://www.theverge.com/2016/6/10/11898470/pokemon-go-ios-android-niantic-ingress-ar-first-look

Pokemon Go is the latest installment in the two decade long gaming craze. Pokemon Go is not simply an extension, it’s an expansion. From all initial signs this first week of beta testing, it’s closer to an explosion. The Pokemon Go Craze Pokemon came to American in the 1990s and has hung in there as far as a relevant game. The basic premise of the game is to travel the world and capture monsters called Pokemon. In order to capture a pokemon you must first find a wild pokemon, then wear it down using your trained pokemon, then attempt to  capture…

The Gaming Heart

The Gaming Heart I realized several years ago I needed to change the way I gamed. When I was gaming I found that I began to build my life around the next time I could play. I’d adjust my work schedule, maybe turn down a social engagement, or stay up WAY later than I planned. My Measure of Joy I don’t play video games anymore, and for a while I believed that fixed all my problems. I got new hobbies, I spent more time with my fam, I got more sleep. But then I found my heart, the part of me…

God Loves Gamers

God loves gamers. All of them. That's a no strings attached promise.

God loves gamers. Gaming is not something you have to quit to find God. It’s not an ultimatum: IF you love God, THEN you’ll quit gaming. God loves gamers. Loves us enough to set his safety aside and be a sacrifice for us. I’m not talking about the “good” gamers who only play “Christian” games. He’s ALREADY died for every pissed-off, foul-mouthed, angry, lonely, bitter, DOTA 2 playing, internet trolling one of us! (that is my paraphrase. The real version is here: Romans 5:8) As a matter of fact he hardwired into us many of the things we love about…

God gave parents, not professionals

Parents, God has entrusted your children to you for a reason. Sometimes it’s easy to question our parenting practices. It’s easy to believe that someone else has secret info into the lives of our children. This doubt can sound like: They’re a professional, right? They sure seem confident What I’m doing clearly isn’t working That does sound easier I want to encourage all parents right now: You’re the professional in the field of your child. Want an example? Think back to a time when you were at an event that included children. It could be a play ground, school, dinner out…

Crash Course FPS: Part 3 – Fancy Freakin’ Graphics

graphics in FPS

Gamers play their favorite games for different reasons. This post is the 3rd in a trilogy. In the first two posts on First Person Shooters (FPS) I gave some specific examples for why gamers love FPS: Part 1: We love that we get to be an epic hero. Part 2: We love the incredible storylines And now, Part 3: We love the fancy freakin’ graphics If you’ve watched the videos I included in the previous articles you’ve seen some of the best heroes and plots the FPS genre has to offer. If you haven’t, go back and watch! But to be fair, their…

Addiction and Gaming: 13 Signs

Parents, friends, and loved ones often ask great questions: Is my gamer addicted? What does addiction look like? Can I really be addicted to gaming? This list includes thirteen signs that a gamer is struggling with unhealthy gaming behavior. Since practice makes permanent, these signs tell us that they are headed in the wrong direction on their journey to who God has called them to be. It is important to remember that addiction, at its core, makes us captive to behaviors we know aren’t good for us, and we know we can’t stop on our own. Jesus promised that he…

Gaming Addiction: Practice Makes…

Practice doesn’t make perfect: Practice makes permanent.  In gaming this means our gaming habits become ingrained in us. They become part of who we are, how we think, what we do. In science this is partly explained by neural plasticity; basically your brain works hard to specialize in whatever you make it do the most. Want to be great at running? Run well, and a lot! Want to be great at piano? Practice well, and a lot! Want to be great at gaming? You get the idea. It’s important to note: Practicing something a lot doesn’t mean you’ll be good at it! You…

Halo 5: Game Review

Parents Need to Know Halo 5 is all about player combat. In the story line of the game use a range of weapons (pistols, machine guns, grenade launchers, laser swords) to kill both human and alien enemies.  This game is graphically appealing, includes tons of gunfire, explosions, futuristic war machines, and death. The designers did remove blood from the game, yet the sheer body count still takes its toll. This game is not appropriate for younger gamers. Parents should be active in helping their gamer decide if and when online play is appropriate. Appropriate For: 16+            …
